I was really excited to read this book after reading Zoo Nebraska, but was overwhelmingly disappointed. While the author's love for the animals that lived at Zoo Nebraska is clear, I don't think anyone did a basic proofread of any of this book. There are random question marks in places that could not conceivably need question marks. There are no commas where there should be commas and commas in places that definitely don't need commas. There are multiple sentences that have words in the wrong tense or just random words that seem to be left over from a previous version of the sentence. I have never written a review of a book on Amazon before but had to write this one to save others from this rambling, mistake-riddled nightmare.

To say this book is wonderfully written would be an understatement. It is powerful as the author’s emotions punch though almost every page. Reuben, a long term captive chimpanzee’s animal rights were violated for years before even the basics of animal companionship were provided.This is an animal story with some very strong differences. There are fantastic examples of chimpanzee interactions and stunning examples of human and chimpanzee bonds. There is love, joy, hope and despair. However, it is one true story where evil does triumph over good...but hey this is the 21st Century.The ending is harsh, horridly sad and so wrong. The most deplorable event is that many of the innocent are killed in the most dreadful of ways. But yet the Jensen family who put this American tragedy in motion were never committed to an asylum.I’m waiting for the movie.

A poorly written book that appears to be fueled by her personal gripes, or grudges against the Nebraska town that deported her & her husband back to British Columbia Canada . I was surprised to read her written admission to criminal activity in the book, because I had heard previously of the Bakken's exploits while they worked in America. I had bought the book as a heart touching animal story, but found it to be propaganda material to try to justify their poor Zoo practices, and greed motivated activity. I probably won't be buy this authors material again.

A beautifully told story that attests to the unfortunate nature of how animals are often treated as commodities in our society.

The sensitivity and insight with which this book was written is amazing. The story is often sad and sometimes funny, however, I'm sure very truthful!

The common theme within all of her books is that love and faith conquers all, and how hope and resilience can help you rise above even the most difficult of situations. I think her trademark message has never shined more brightly than it does in From Sand and Ash. Eva & Angelo’s story is one that I will never ever forget.I really hope that people give this book a chance. Even if you’re not a fan of historical fiction, the message in this book is one that we need to be reminded of. This is a true account of a former Jehovah's Witness who explains their version of the 'Truth" and their beliefs in a concise, logical way. Most of us have had experiences with Jehovah's Witnesses and know some basic things - like their door-to-door prosthetizing, their refusal to celebrate holidays, birthdays and the like, their refusal to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, cross their heart for the National Anthem etc... I personally, have never been able to understand their beliefs until I read about The Watchtower Society, its teachings and revisions to the 'Truth' that have happened throughout the years. I have also been offended by the outright misogyny I have encountered -- tried discussing it with a JW coworker who basically could not discuss it in any logical way. The more and more I read about the JW, I see how cult-like its behaviors are and how harmful the isolation of members can be. This book is one man's experience but he explains things in a way you can understand and is very thought provoking.For all the sincere belief many of its members have, I find it sad that they have such a horrible view of the world and the people in it. I am happy for the author - his leaving the JW seems to have made him happier.I have said before, a true good religion should stand up to questioning and in fact, should welcome it. Not just give authoritarian pronouncements and oppress its members to live us/them dynamics which never amount to good.

This is a very revealing book about the so-called religion, and he spells out what is really going on behind the curtain. A must read for everyone who wants to know the " truth" about the beginning till now of the Jehovah's Witnesses!

I myself started having doubts two years ago, and I no longer believe in a God, after many scientific, philosophical, historical, archeological, theological, etc... research. The Jehovah Witnesses are a dangerous cult, and more books need to be written to rise awareness of this fact.

Excellent and well researched account of the Watchtower Society and a very articulated account of the author's own experiences as a Jehovah Witness. As a an ex-Jehovah Witness myself I found this book to be one of the best that I've read on the subject. I learned a few things that I didn't even know. Well worth reading.

As a former Jehovah's Witness I can attest to the accuracy of Mr. James tale. The things he experienced during his time within the organization, certainly ring true to me. But also as an ex-JW, much of the history and facts about the Watchtower corporation were old news. I am well-familiar with much of his source material.I highly recommend this book for those who are not JWs, perhaps those contemplating joining the cult, or those who have friends and family members who are in it or thinking of joining.Those happy smiling faces that show up at your doorstep can be deceptive. Read Mr. James book to better understand what I mean. Also, for ex-JWs, the chapters on the life and family of the author will be an interesting read.

The author documents well his life experience as a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. He lays bare the false theology and doctrine of the faith. His disillusionment however leads him to a false conclusion that God does not exist.

I gave only 3 stars because while I felt it made a good case against JW teachings, it also tried to offer the possibility that God does not exist at all. I am a strong Christian and it angers me that Satan could so cunningly damage someone to such a degree that, after releasing his grip from a mind controlling cult, he would convince them that God doesn't even exist. That is not true freedom! Please don't throw the baby out with the bath water. God does exist and there is such a thing as REAL TRUTH, as revealed through the Holy Spirit, not some committee somewhere. We can have a personal relationship with God. He wants to govern us through the Holy Spirit, not manmade rules! And yes, I believe in life after death and a hope beyond this life! However, I believe my eternal life has already begun through Christ! I am filled with joy and peace! I am not afraid of what others think. My sister has been in this cult for over 50 years. I read this book to better know how to reach her. I have to believe there is a way, but they are so afraid of "lies". Are lies more powerful than "truth" to these people? Greater is He that is in us (Christians) than He that is in the world (JW)! This is what Satan is teaching them to fear; truth (which they think is lies)! The truth will set them free and Satan knows it! What is greater: truth or lies? No lie can make truth any less a truth, if that what it truly is!

To study for my boards I used this book and the official ASCP review book. In my opinion the ASCP review book was a waste of money. The questions in that book are a lot easier and very few of the questions have decent explanations of the answers. I learned so much more from Harr's review book because on the opposite side of the page for every question is an explanation of not only why the answer is what it is but also why the other choices were not correct. The ASCP review book for most of the questions does not provide a reason behind the answer but a reference to another book for more information or just repeats the question into the explanation.I also liked Harr's review book better because of the CD that came with it. It has more picture based questions and a way for you to customize your quizzes so you can choose how many questions you want, which disciplines of CLS you want questions to be taken from, and the difficulty level of the questions. After you finish the quiz it will give you a percentage break down of how well you did in each area so you know where you need to focus your studying too. The CD does not give you explanations of the answers however, just what the correct answers are.The only negative I can say for Harr's review book is that because the questions are much harder I only got about 75% of the questions in most sections and for some areas I couldn't even break 70%. So you have to keep in the mind set that you are not supposed to know the answers to all of these questions (but good for you if you do!). Even with those percentages I easily passed the boards and it was because of this book. I never looked over my books or notes from my classes and after going through the ASCP review book once, never picked it up again because the questions were not helpful to me without a decent explanation behind the answer.Highly recommend this book and do not worry at all about not buying the ASCP review book. You will sail through the boards if you use this book taking care to read the explanation of the answers even when you get the question right because there is information in there that goes beyond the question. The best thing I learned from this book was how to work through a question so when I didn't know the answer to a question on the boards exam I could work through why each possible answer was wrong to determine which answer must be right. And this book really helps train you how to be able to do this if used properly.

I studied with this book for about 2 weeks and I'm convinced it made all the difference in the world. It's the best way to study, with questions and answers + in depth explanations right on the same page. The CD was very helpful because you can male your own tests by selecting the number of questions, specific areas to be tested over and level of question (so if you really want to test yourself you can choose only level 3). the only problem with the CD is that there are no explanations but it's a good way to test yourself and see your week areas and where to go back to your notes to study up on. But I truly think the book itself is a great review guide since it hits on pretty much everything you could be tested over.I went into the test and passed on the first try. Everyone said it would be so hard I would pass but I'd be having a nervous break down, but after studying with this book, it felt like a piece of cake. I was done with the test in under an hour and they give you 2.5 hours.Please buy this book. you'll thank yourself

Great little study guide to brush up on already established fundamentals!

have to admit that this book is one the best compared to all the other review books I have come across. When I was preparing to take the ASCP test I mostly studied from this book and, after I went through almost all the sections at least twice, I felt I was ready. The test wasn't easy, but if you go through the explanations offered for both right and wrong answers you have a very good chance of passing. I was able to pass the test with a very high score due in part to the in-depth explanations the authors provided. Remember, you must be willing to put the effort in to go through the feedbacks even when you answer a question correctly.Good luck!!

I found the questions on this review book extremely difficult, but don't be discouraged. This helped me practice my elimination skills in order to narrow down my answers. This helps a lot when not knowing the answer to a question but knowing how to work through the questions.

This study guide prepares me better for ASCP test than their study guide because it gives the answers to the questions with an explanation; therefore if I get the wrong answer, the explanation gives me the right answer and triggers the memory of the correct answer instead of just being wrong.

This is the most difficult review book that I've come across. It contains harder questions than the ACSP Bor review book, NCA review book and the Prentice Hall Q and A review book. If you like challenging questions, then this book is for you. If you just want the basics and normal questions, then go with the other books. It has the explainations along side the questions on the very same page which is nice. Not really for students studying for the MLT exam but more toward MT level exam material. The new 3rd edition comes with new CD software with quizes and photographs which I found to be very nice.

Great review book with many many questions both in the book and on the cd. Perfect for an MLS/CLS review. Very specific and in depth questions.

The version we got is the 1995 edition and is good for a backup chart ... but doesn't reflect the dozens of chart updates made since waters around Vieques were opened to cruisers and sailors. We're somewhat disappointed.

Excellent It bailed us out when we ran out of light before getting into the anchorage at Philipsburg and got us into several beaches that were completely deserted.A bit dated is spots (it is 7 years old) For example, Saba has installed a number of excellent mooring on the south and west sides on the island, making it much easier to get either by the traditional landing or LLadder Landing on the West side. There is a road down to that now (no more 1000 steps to climb). However it was out when we were there (4-1-00)

We've sailed and chartered in the USVI and BVI numerous times and ALWAYS take this guide with us. From little known anchorages (Mermaids Chair on St. Thomas) to the most frequented (Great Harbor on Yost Van Dyke)this guide is without equal.

Stacey Waite is the author of three collections of poems: Choke (winner of the 2004 Frank O'Hara Prize), Love Poem to Androgyny (Main Street Rag, 2007), and the lake has no saint (winner of Tupelo Press's 2008 Snowbound Chapbook Award). With both an M.F.A. in poetry and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Pittsburgh, Waite now teaches courses in writing, gender studies, and pedagogy as an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Beautifully written poems that challenge narrow definitions of gender identity. I used a number of poems from this book in my graduate class on Poetry and Identity, and my grad students also loved Waite's work. These poems are accessible, and tend toward the narrative, and are by turns heartbreaking, beautiful and funny. And there is much to discuss in terms of craft, too--these poems are easy to read, yet reward multiple readings. I enjoyed this book so much I'm going to buy Waite's other books! A poet to watch out for!

A most wonderful poetry collection - it works on many levels. Both an intimate, lyrical inquiry into the world's most tender topics, and a self-exploration, a triumph of an identity in the world of archetypes. A must-read for modern poetry lovers and anyone who cares about LGBT issues - and a double gift at that.

Great concept. However, unfortunately disappointing quality of poems. I'd recommend Ivan Coyote or Bear Bergman instead.

I chose this rating because it was an entertaining interesting read, it was just hard to understand the start of the book on who is who.

The stories of gender identity in this book would take over the book in the hands of a less-skilled writer, but Stacey Waite matches the stories and then some by finding the perfect words to artistically bring them to life for a reader. As if growing up isn't already difficult enough, Waite tells stories of growing up with an identity that can be hard to identify in our this-or-that world, telling them with the humor and gravity needed to make them seem like our own.

You know when you are talking to yourself in your head and no one else is listening but you keep talking anyway? Well, that is the vibe I got when I read most of these short stories and I loved it!I normally don’t gravitate towards short stories, but something about the cover made me look into this book. After I read the first two chapters I knew I liked them, but since it wasn’t an ongoing story I felt something was holding me back. But, as I started whipping through each story within 20 – 40 minutes, I realized I craved the next. I kept asking: where is author, Curtis Sittenfeld, going to go to next?To me, the overall theme was that each character was in their own head. They were concerned with what they thought outside perceptions would expect (or sometimes outcomes they were hoping for) that they completely misread situations. Some would come to realize that, some would not.The writing was authentic and relatable. Although the stories were short they packed the necessary punch to keep you engaged. After I finished each story I would think of each character “where are they now?” The cool thing about this book is that I can create the answer to that question in my own head; since aren’t we all in our own heads…see what I did there?! Is it still funny if I must point it out? Don’t answer that.This is the first Curtis Sittenfeld book I have read and certainly not the last.

Curtis Sittenfield is a delightful satirist and assured storyteller as well as an underrated political writer. "You Think It" isn't billed as a "Trump book," nor is it, but so many of these stories show the conundrums---social, sexual, professional---of this singular political moment. I could imagine reading this again ten years from now and thinking, "Yes, that's what it was like!"In all of her books, Curtis Sittenfield does such a superb job of capturing the awkward and occasionally exhilarating dance of gender relations, and there's much of the same here, though the subject is often marriage or post-marriage. As a now-married read and longtime fan, it's been a delight to "grow up" with Curtis. I'm roughly the same age as her and read "Prep" when I was just distant enough from high school to be able to laugh at it while also remember it well. I feel lucky to have Curtis Sittenfield bringing the same gimlet-eye to early middle age, its vanities and resentments and small victories. If satire can also be cozy and comforting, this is it.

Perfectly-cut gems—they refract the light of truth, and sparkle with life. Curtis Sittenfeld definitely knows a certain swath of humanity intimately (the whiter-than-white portion), and reveals it so well I marveled and cringed simultaneously. I'd read and enjoyed "Prep", but not enough to want to read everything Sittenfeld wrote (whereas Amor Towles or Charles Bukowski or Louise Fitzhugh or Raymond Carver etc, I became obsessed with). Her style and eye work perfectly in short form.

I'm a huge CS fan, and this didn't disappoint! I had read some of these stories before (in the New Yorker), but I read again because they're that good. I don't know how she gets into the nitty gritty of life and thoughts and conversations the way she does. She's so graceful about it, but it isn't pretentious. The only hard part was rationing the stories out b/c I didn't want to finish too quickly. If you're a CS fan, absolutely read this. It's vintage her.

I usually don't read many short stories. With this being a pick for one of my Goodreads groups a while back,I decided to give this collection a chance. I have taken quite a while to finish,but it was easy to just read one story at a time then go back to books with more pressing deadlines.Each story was a gem. None turned out as I expected. I feel short stories are harder to write as so much has to be captured in less.

This book is incredible. I have been a fan of Sittenfeld since I read Prep (50 times) and then I went back and read Man of My Dreams and have since pre-ordered every book she's every written. Some of her books have disappointed me (Sisterland and Eligible) but this one was right up there with American Wife and Prep. Every single story ended too soon, I wanted more. I found things I loved and hated (but yet related to) about every character. Every short story was a page turner. I devoured this book. I highly recommend it.

Some of the stories were entertaining but all in all I didn’t care for this book. I am not a Hillary supporter and I don’t see humor in our President. Most of these stories read as though the author is suffering from resentment from early adulthood. Each story has some kind of getting even. It became boring and old. Sorry I spent the money on it.

This book is not good, the author tries to include a lot of imagery that ends up feeling like nonsense details that don’t add any real flavor to the stories. It’s also a choppy read; not a difficult one, but it’s hard to stay focused. Aside from that, the actual substance of the stories told just weren’t my cup of tea. Sometimes I can overlook sloppy writing if the story is interesting, was not the case for me
